Being able to showcase his comic and artistic abilities to a wider audience was a real accomplishment, not only personally but also in a professional sense as well.įestival 800, where his work was showcased, provided its visitors with an in-depth look as to what the Magna Carta was and what it meant to modern history. By creating the comic he was artistically celebrating the 800th anniversary of the official signing of the document. This document illustrates and describes the rebellion by the Barons that forced the King to sign an order that changed the overall definition of what it meant to rule.Īl Davison’s depiction of the Magna Carta, was the first time the story was being told through a comic. Magna Carta means ‘The Great Charter’ and was originally issued in England to provide rights and establish a law. The Magna Carta is a document and that is famously celebrated worldwide. One of Al Davison’s greatest achievements was to be commissioned to create Magna Carta - “a 10-page, 30-panel graphic tale of the journey and impact of the 800-year-old Magna Carta produced for Festival 800 in Lincoln”.

As an adult, Al began to see past the bullies and become more effective at proving himself to others.

But the author expressed the hope that he had felt in his bones as he knew all along that he could surpass this immense struggle, even as a young child.įurthermore, when Al was young he was continuously tormented by his peers at school and called horrible names related to his medical condition. When Al was little he saw himself to have overcome a major obstacle that would have seemed impossible, and honestly should not have been possible. The theme of heroism has traveled across the book in many different levels. Furthermore, when Al does for the first time walk in front of everyone at the hospital he is in his Batman outfit.

At first when Al claims that he can, in fact, walk he has his Superman costume on. Throughout the illustrations of this memoir, you can see Al use various superheroes to represent his younger self.
