Unlike City of Glass which seemed to unravel rather than spin a plot and unlike Ghosts which seemed more allegorical than realist, The Locked Room has a realistic plot which pulls together some of the loose threads of City of Glass. This enigmatic choice is typical of the oddities within this work. It seems that the quote is Auster’s own, but written solely for the beginning of this work. Google was of no immediate help in locating a separate writing of Auster’s in which this quote appears. The quote does not appear, other than at this point, anywhere in The New York Trilogy.

The recent Broadway staging followed its English premiere at London’s National Theatre in 2018, a North American debut at the Park Avenue Armory in 2019, and a subsequent West End engagement. A novelization was published in June 2020. Written by Stefano Massini and adapted by Ben Power, The Lehman Trilogy weaves nearly two centuries of family history to chart the humble beginnings, outrageous successes, and devastating failure of the financial institution that would ultimately bring the global economy to its knees. McMullen, and the stage manager is Lucas Bryce Dixon. Avital Shira serves as assistant director, and Lee Nishri-Howitt as the production's voice coach. Julie Felise Dubiner is dramaturg. The creative team features scenic design by Sara Brown, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by Robert Wierzel, sound design and music composition by Mark Bennett, additional sound design by Charles Coes, projection design by Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, and movement consulting by Misha Shields.
